| | "Breathe" by the Cure | ] | A friend of mine e-mailed this to me - I don't have any credit info - sorry about that and thanks to whoever wrote it.
Mr. John Hinckley St. Elizabeth's Hospital Washington, DC
Dear John:
Laura and I hope that you are continuing your excellent progress in recovery from your mental problems. We were pleased to hear that you are now able to have unsupervised visits with your parents. The staff at the hospital report that you are doing fine.
I have decided to seek a second term in office as your president and I would appreciate your support and the support of your fine parents. And both Laura and I would hope that if there is anything that you need at the hospital, you will let us know.
By the way, were you aware that John Kerry is screwing Jody Foster?
Sincerely, George W. Bush President of the United States |

And I've only made it through the first book of Paradise Lost. I hope somebody out there has made it farther and has some pithy comments to help get this going. I'm happy so far just having read the source for this quote "Better to reign in hell, than serve in heaven" (my eng. profs would hate the improper quoting). I knew it was in this poem but reading it in context makes me feel cooler. Well, in the next few days I'll try to get some fun or challenging questions and veiwpoints about the first book. Outside of that My Life Is Good!

| | "Nothing Compares 2u" Sinead O'Connor | ] | I've lived in downtown Eugene for six years now and I really enjoy this town. One of the highlights of this has been a local bar that's a got a nice punk/metal/freak vibe. I go to this bar once or twice a week - on thursday's for 80's night which has a kick ass set of DJ's who play a great variety of music and definitely are fans of the alternative side (I get a regular dose of the Cure :)). Outside of eighties night through the years I've seen a lot of bands there, body piercing and manipulation shows (closest I have ever come to fainting), DJ's, holiday events etc... Overall the place has been a whole lot of fun and insanity. Well, a couple months back they started to have a new weekly feature on sundays The Broadway Revue and Burlesque show. These shows have a been a whole lot of fun. They consist of strippers, jugglers, knife dancing, standup comedy and just general weirdness. Me and my friends have loved them and have had some great nights out at the burlesque show. This show sounds pretty cool all by itself but it gets cooler because a good chunk of the acts are done by the bars staff, and volunteers. Some of the beneficial points to this are things like watching a girl you kind of know strip for the first time or seeing the entire bar staff get involved in a Benny Hill style chasing skit. I shouldn't even mention amazing moments like one of the bartenders doing a sword dance to a song called "The Black Rider" while strippers fake die around him on stage (this was a truly fantastic performance). So, what this leads to is that me and one of my friends want to stage an act to join them with for at least one sunday night and maybe more. Now, no one wants to see me or my friend strip and niether of us have any stage skills (though we have both sung with bands and really have no problem with making asses of ourselves). We kind of talked it out and we've decided that we should do a cut from Milton's Paradise Lost act it out with puppets and maybe some fun music. There is one initial problem with this - I haven't read "Paradise Lost" - I'm lazy and easily distracted. So, I asked my brother, Zipzilla, if he would be interested in reading and discussing the poem with me and then as we talked I figured what the hell! let's do this on LJ and see if I can get other family members and people out in the world at large to read it with me. Alright, the first step in this, is gathering materials. I have the Norton critical edition of Paradise Lost which is what I would recommend that you pick up if you can get it conveniently. I recommend this edition cuz' it has sensible annotations - not too heavy, but enough that you have your questions about text weirdness answered. Anyone who wants to read with me please post. I'm gonna start reading and will post again within the next two days. btw - don't stress about the edition - Annotation only explains stuff it doesn't make the poem any different or better |

| | "Buffalo Soldier" Bob Marley and The Wailers | ] | Well, I know I'm slow to post this but here's the first twenty songs off a shuffle from my entire playlist (x-mas songs excluded):
1 "True Colors" Cyndi Lauper 2 "Claire" Jimmy Eat World 3 "Could You be Love" Bob Marley and The Wailers 4 "You Don't Own Me" Lesley Gore 5 "I'm a Rainbow Too" Fatboy Slim remix of Bob Marley 6 "Some Velvet Morning" Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood 7 "Down Poison" 3 Doors Down 8 "Let Love Rule" Lenny Kravitz 9 "Man of Constant Sorrow" Soggybottom Boys 10 "Seeing Red" Unwritten Law 11 Linkin' Park - don't have song title 12 "Headstrong" Trapt 13 "Crimson and Clover" Joan Jett and the Blackhearts 14 "Cats in the Cradle" Harry Chapin 15 Linkin' Park - don't have song title 16 "Rhinoceros" Various Artists (I Have No Clue) 17 "Vox" Sarah McLachlan 18 "Seasons in the Sun" Terry Jacks 19 "One Tin Soldier" Coven 20 "Red, Red, Wine" Bob Marley and The Wailers
On an odd note I'd always thought the song was "cat's and the cradle and trhe little boy blue". It's not, it's "Cat's in the cradle and little boy blue" much more sinister. Then it makes me think of my change in thinking since we've had the boy. Perspectives change. |

| | The Waterboys "She is so Beautiful" | ] | At 8am as I stumble to bed My god, his eyes are huge Tousled head and maniac gleam His head peaking over his mama's hip Her eyes, tired, an' her face red We laugh as he squeals -
His clapping and Lord! such glee
The sunlight pours in And we catch him between us - Both tired, both smilin'
Hell... There ain't no choice But love. |

| | Bob Marley "Jammin" | ] | Tell me the secret of direction and self delusion. I would bathe my myself in discretion. Every part of me invulnerable to deceit. Yes, I would take your purpose. The only thing I truly know is me, being that it is the only perspective I have, not a study in my depth. The assumption is that the same is true for others. You can train your perceptions, learned skills of understanding. But, all perceptions and perspectives are forced into the subjective mold of the individual mind. You can teach me your vocabulary, process, system, grind and all you can do is hope that my understanding of these things will give me a touch of insight. The only thing a critical perspective can gain is the abilty to judge the rightness of a thing. This is a value judgement and you cannot learn value but through comparison and experience - abetted by intellect. The hope is a fine tuned approach to discernment and a recognition of detail. Understanding detail and having language to explain it are the skills required of the critic, gourmet, artis or any person who claims mastery of a skill or talent. Naivete and innocence are the hopes of the jaded - People wishing to defy Cool in desperate hope that self loathing of ones work is not required. The risk of any venture into the artistic is embarrassment. |
